The Yanacona were a group of state servants who were exempt from the labor service tax. They were taken from their [G 05 / ayllu] at a young age and were trained to serve the state and the emperor. They were servants, pages and temple attendants, or they were given to nobles and warriors as servants. Many of them were either the sons of [G 10 / curacas] or boys who had been picked out for their intelligence.
In this system they were quickly able to rise to important posts. When the Spanish invaded, they continued the practice of having a servant class above the peasant class. Under the Spanish they were treated badly and had no chance of social or economic advancement.
